Painting

I love to paint... especially watercolor. Listed below are some of my favorites, shown with the most recent painting first. Many of these are copies of other peoples paintings that I liked... or exercises from a watercolor book. I've tried to indicate which are copies where appropriate. All of these are painted with watercolor, unless otherwise indicated.

Another tree painting... finally finished. I started this early in the year -- as another attempt at a painting for my brother. Turns out he liked the one I finished in December 2001, so I finally framed it for him. This one is for me!

Oct 2001 (Gouache)

The final project in my UCSD painting class was to paint a copy of a master's work using gouache. I chose this painting by Monet.

OK... so I have a LONG way to go before my work will be confused with Monet's!

In my Introduction to Painting class at UCSD in Fall 2001, we were to take the same photo and paint it in two different styles. I was still trying to figure out how to use gouache (an opaque watercolor)...

Here's the original photo (from the photo gallery at http://john1701a.com/) and the two paintings.

Sept 2001 (Gouache)

This is from a photo taken in George's garden.

Summer 2001

Based on a technique called "slop and drop" which I learned in the Foolproof Watercolor class by Carol Ravy. You start by wetting the paper and randomly painting patterns with colors that are pleasing to you. Then you step back and stare at the paper and try to figure out what you've painted. You turn the paper in all 4 directions until something pops out at you, and then you enhance it if necessary. What can I say... this is what I got!

Summer 2001
