Hiking in Torrey Pines Reserve Extension
November 5, 2002
The Torrey Pines Reserve Extension is located on the north side of Los Penasquitos Lagoon. The Extension is accessible by driving straight up a residential street (Del Mar Scenic Parkway) from the entrance to the Torrey Pines State Beach parking lot on Carmel Valley Road.

George and I visited this beautiful little park in November. The main goal of the day was to find a geocache and drop off a travel bug (the Eskimo Moose). A travel bug is a "thing" created by a geocacher and left in a cache, generally with some specific goal that the bug wants to accomplish. If you find the bug and can help it accomplish its goal, you take it, maybe do something with it, and place it in another cache. In this case, the Eskimo Moose wanted to explore watery highways and country roads. I took it in hopes of taking it sailing, but the weather didn't cooperate. So, I decided placing it within view of the Pacific Ocean was a good step in its travels. On the way to the Del Mar Ocean View Geocache, I gave him some superb views of the Torrey Pines Reserve, the Los Penasquitos Lagoon, and the ocean in Del Mar. After enjoying the view, I stuffed him into the cache container so that some other Geocacher could come along and help him on his travels.

Here's the beginning of the trail...

We continued on our way, enjoying more views ourselves. We decided to hit another cache in the area (Torrey Extension Cache), and ended the day with some spectacular views of the I-5 corridor... and another cache to add to our totals.
